Brewing news USA: North Carolina takes the first step in removing alcohol cap on beverages

The General Assembly of North Carolina took one step forward in allowing sales of higher-alcohol beers, with the Senate tentatively approving the change, Associated Press communicated on August 3. North Carolina is one of six states that cap the alcohol content of beer and other malt beverages to no more than six percent. The law dates back 70 years.

The measure would raise the limit to 15 percent. The House approved the bill three months ago but the Senate Finance Committee had bottled up the measure for the past four weeks because one of its chairmen raised questions about it.

Beer fans have been working to boost the limit for the past two years.
